What is Expedition Vanguard?
Expedition Vanguard is a premier leadership development program designed to challenge high school aged young men and women through an immersive 15-day outdoor adventure. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of West Virginia’s wilderness, this program combines rigorous physical challenges with structured mentorship to cultivate resilience, teamwork, and leadership skills in participants. Expedition Vanguard is not just an adventure—it's a journey of self-discovery and growth that prepares young people to become confident and capable leaders.
The Journey:
Selection Process:
Expedition Vanguard begins with a competitive selection process where 30 young men and women are invited to participate in a weekend of challenges and evaluations. This selection weekend, held over Columbus Day, is designed to identify those who demonstrate the potential for leadership, commitment, and resilience. From this group, 12 participants (six guys and six girls) are chosen for the main expedition, with an additional four participants selected for backside support roles.
Training and Preparation:
Before embarking on the expedition, participants attend a comprehensive training weekend in April. This weekend focuses on building the skills and confidence needed for the challenges ahead, including physical conditioning, outdoor skills, and leadership development. Participants receive hands-on training and detailed briefings to ensure they are fully prepared.
The Expedition:
The heart of Expedition Vanguard is a 15-day journey through some of the most rugged and beautiful terrains in West Virginia. Participants will engage in both backpacking and canoe-packing, navigating through diverse landscapes and waterways. Each day, participants are given the opportunity to lead the group, applying the skills they have learned in real-world scenarios. The expedition is structured to promote personal growth, teamwork, and the development of leadership qualities that will last a lifetime.
Support Structure:
A dedicated backside support team plays a crucial role in the success of Expedition Vanguard. This team, including a Backside Support Leader, Assistant, and four specially selected participants, provides logistical and operational support throughout the expedition. Their involvement ensures that the expedition runs smoothly and that all participants have the resources they need to succeed.

Expedition Vanguard is an invaluable experience, but it does come with significant costs. However, we believe that financial barriers should not stand in the way of those eager to embark on this transformative journey. That’s why our goal is for participants to fund their adventure through sponsorship, rather than out-of-pocket expenses.
How Sponsorship Works:
Each participant selected for the expedition is encouraged to secure sponsorships from their community—whether from local businesses, family, friends, or other supporters. This approach not only makes the expedition accessible but also teaches participants valuable skills in networking, fundraising, and community engagement.
The required sponsorship for each participant is $2,800. For those selected for backside support roles, the sponsorship goal is $450. These funds cover the cost of the expedition, including training, gear, logistics, and support staff.
